UMI on FHIR tar steg mot europeisk harmonisering

Sverige deltar aktivt i arbetsmötena kring europeisk FHIR-profilering inom HL7 Europe.

Nästa hållplats: HL7 Europe Working Group Meeting i Málaga

Scaling up FHIR profiling in Sweden

There is a lot happening within HL7 Sweden right now. One important development is the launch of a Technical Coordination Team, TNT, to help coordinate and scale the Swedish work on FHIR profiles and implementation guides.

At the same time, the UMI on FHIR work is progressing, while Swedish activities are becoming increasingly connected to the European development of FHIR and the European Health Data Space.

New Technical Coordination Team to support more implementation guides

To move from individual implementation guides towards a more coordinated and scalable profiling capability, HL7 Sweden has established a Technical Coordination Team, TNT.

TNT will support common ways of working, technical coordination and guidance for the development and publication of Swedish FHIR Implementation Guides.

The goal is not simply to develop individual profiles. We want to establish a shared capability where more groups can develop IGs consistently, while reusing experience, tooling and documentation.

This becomes particularly important as the work expands beyond the Swedish base profiles to initiatives such as UMI and future Swedish profiles related to EHDS.

Common guidance for IG development

As part of the TNT work, common guidance is being developed for areas including language handling and implementation guide publishing.

We are also continuing to coordinate the development of Swedish implementation guides and improve opportunities for different profiling initiatives to reuse and build on each other’s work.

Swedish Base Profiles move towards the FHIR Community Process

The Swedish Base Profiles provide an important foundation for the use of FHIR in Sweden. The current published version is 1.1.0 and includes Swedish base profiles for Patient, Practitioner, PractitionerRole and Organization.

We are now taking the next step.

HL7 Sweden is aiming to align the Base Profile implementation guides and their associated processes to the FHIR Community Process. Processes and supporting documentation are currently being developed.

The ambition is to establish a transparent and reusable approach for how Swedish IGs are developed, maintained and published. This is closely aligned with the FHIR Community Process, which supports open change management and community participation.

UMI on FHIR moves towards European harmonisation

The UMI on FHIR work continues to make progress.

An important area of work is harmonisation with the proposed use of the FHIR Flag resource in the European profiling work within EURIDICE.

This is an exciting development because the UMI work is not only about defining a Swedish solution. It also provides an opportunity to explore how Swedish requirements can be expressed in a way that aligns with the emerging European ecosystem.

HL7 Sweden is developing UMI on FHIR to represent Swedish Medical Alert Information using FHIR and to establish an implementation guide.

EURIDICE

EURIDICE is a joint HL7 Europe and IHE-Europe initiative focused on creating implementable and testable specifications for the EHDS. It combines HL7’s FHIR expertise with IHE methodology for interoperability and testing.

Sweden in the European profiling work

Sweden is actively participating in working meetings on European FHIR profiling within HL7 Europe.

The European work is becoming increasingly important for Sweden. Specifications being developed through initiatives such as EURIDICE will play an important role in the technical realisation of EHDS-related health data exchange.

It is therefore valuable for Swedish experience and requirements to be represented early in the process.

HL7 Sweden welcomes members and others interested in following or contributing to this European work.

Next stop: HL7 Europe Working Group Meeting in Málaga

In November, HL7 Europe will hold its Working Group Meeting in Málaga, Spain.

The meeting takes place on 16–20 November and includes work on European FHIR Implementation Guides, EHDS, workshops, hands-on testing, FHIR in practice, as well as project and governance work.

The programme includes work on European IGs, EURIDICE, terminology handling, comparison of national and European IGs, and implementation and testing.

For anyone working with FHIR profiling, EHDS or national interoperability, this is an opportunity to follow the development and connect with others working on the same challenges.

Get involved

A key part of HL7 Sweden’s work is to provide an open arena where experience from regions, government agencies, vendors, academia and other stakeholders can come together.

There are currently several ways to get involved:

  • contribute to the Swedish Base Profiles
  • follow or contribute to UMI on FHIR
  • participate in the Technical Coordination Team and the development of common ways of working
  • follow the European FHIR and EHDS work
  • contribute Swedish perspectives to European working groups and discussions

The more organisations and experts contribute, the better we can develop specifications that work both in Sweden and across the European ecosystem.
